Where do you find information about Target Companies
Where do you find information about Target Companies Ive been in D.C. speaking this week. Tonight/tomorrow I am honored to spend time with one of my best friends at his wedding. What a choice week its been! Heres an excellent resource to find awesome companies that might make your Target Company List: Silicon Slopes Company Intelligence page. This is limited to Utah companies (Silicon Slopes - slopes = skiing) If I were looking for a job in Utah, I would probably spend weeks on this page + LinkedIn working on networking into each of these companies. The bigger ones seem to have their revenue listed, which is awesome. The other ones dont have revenue listed, but just being on this list means something. Where do you find lists like this that are relevant to you? In different places. Crunchbase is an awesome resource. Spoke is growing to be an awesome resource like this. In your own area, ask a V.C. (venture capitalist) for a resource similar to Silicon Slopes. They should either know about it, point you to their own portfolio, or hopefully create something like Silicon Slopes. BONUS: Once you find lists like this, use JibberJobber to keep track of the companies, as well as the relationships you form with people inside those companies. These types of sites arent super-easy to find, but once you find them, they can be really valuable! Where do you find information about Target Companies Ive been in D.C. speaking this week. Civil Service Fast Stream application process, 2013 University of Manchester Careers Blog
Civil Service Fast Stream application process, 2013 University of Manchester Careers Blog If you want to influence how the UK operates, the Civil Service should be high up on your list of possible careers. Last night, we were lucky to have an in-depth talk on the application process from Michael Tansini, an English graduate from York University who has recently joined the Civil Service Fast Stream. Here are some of the facts, inside info and application tips we gleaned from his talk, in case you couldnt make it. The slides Michael used are also at the end of the post. UPDATE: 11 Nov 13 The Fast Stream have just published their new guide to the Fast Stream Assessment Centre (pdf) End of update The Fast Stream facts figures This year there will be approximately 800 vacancies on the Fast Stream. Thatâs up 200 places from last year and considerably more than the year before when there were significant recruitment freezes contrary to popular belief, this part of the public sector is open for business. The Diplomatic Service (Foreign Commonwealth Office part of the Generalist Fast Stream) is, as ever, the most popular stream, with about 120 applicants per available place. Second most popular for applicants are the Economist places within the Analytical Stream. Last year there were 150 places available, and they recruited around 120 people. The first round for this stream has already closed. They anticipate a second round of recruitment opening in February (NB: this doesnt happen for the other streams). HR and Technology are popular with the people who prefer to specialise and move around within one department rather than move between departments. Q: Which university sends most applications to the Civil Service? A: Queens University, Belfast more applicants than any other university, including Oxford and Cambridge (bet you didnt guess that). There are a high number of Oxbridge candidates on the Fast Stream but this is more to do with volume of applicants rather than bias in the recruitment process as is often perceived. Last year there were 14 successful applications from University of Manchester not bad but could be much better, especially if more good Manchester students applied! If successful itâs possible to defer the start if you want to take a year out after university. It may be possible to take time out in the middle of the programme but that would be an internal departmental decision. Advice on the application process Theres a step-by-step guide to the application process on the Fast Steam website the closing date for applications for most streams is 31st October. For most streams, whether you have a 2.1 or a 2.2 matters less than being able to meet the competencies. However, some streams (such as Technology in Business) do require a 2:1 or a postgraduate degree. Once you sign up, you have 7 days to complete the first online tests. Last day to sign in for this year is 31st October, to be completed by 7th November. Donât be tempted to get someone else to do the online tests youâll be retested later in the process! One of the critical exercises is an e-tray, which is now completed at home, rather than travelling to an assessment centre. Donât be lulled into being too relaxed just because you can sit there in your pjs doing it! Its really time-critical. Theres a bit more info and a link to the practice e-tray exercise on our post on Recruitment and selection situational judgement tests. You must be consistent, and be able to justify your answers given in the e-tray exercise. You will fail if youre not using the information given and applying it consistently throughout the answers. Time management is often a problem with the e-tray, and many candidates donât complete the exercise in the time given. Failure to complete is worse than completing, but not as thoroughly as you might have liked. The assessment centre is tough. There will be approximately 25 people per centre. You will be tested against the given competencies for the Fast Stream. The average age of those appointed is 28. a) If youre applying for the first time while still at university, without much/any work experience, donât be intimidated if the other applicants have more life/work experience. Youre not marked against each other but against the competencies so concentrate on demonstrating you meet them. b) If youre also closer to 28 than 21, dont assume that youre too old for an entry level role in the Fast Stream, or that you should be considered separately because youre doing a PhD or Masters. Feedback from the assessment centre is excellent. If youre not successful, you will get a detailed 6 page report 3-4 weeks after assessment. Use this feedback if applying again (or applying elsewhere). Gov.uk is your friend! Use this to learn about whatâs going on in government. Bring this into your answers at interview. You might be interviewed by someone whoâs had a hand in shaping the policy or plan youâve been reading about. When talking about yourself, its important to be able to say what you got from an experience, not just what you did. What did you gain/learn? Was there self-improvement? Civil servants must be politically neutral in carrying out their duties. Even if you donât agree with the policy, the job is to enact the wishes of the Government in a way that works for the public in the best way possible. Once you are in more senior roles, you cannot be a member of a political party. If youre very politically active, you should consider whether the Civil Service is really a suitable career option. Quality vs. Quantity What do you Think is Best - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Quality vs. Quantity What do you Think is Best - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Last week @danschawbel and I caught up over lunch and something we touched on was whether the best strategy moving forward for personal brands was the debate between quantity or quality of content. I love this discussion because it really makes you think about what you want to stand for and the perceptions that others will form about your personal brand. The minimum threshold of quality: Let me set the expectation for this discussion. Lets assume that at minimum the content you will create meets the minimum standards of quality. While that may mean different things to different people lets just agree that the minimum threshold of quality is not remarkable content but it is not horrible either. It is middle of the road. In favor or quality: Pro: Those that argue in the favor of quality content generally agree that a lower posting frequency, with an emphasis on depth/breadth is the best way to grow your personal brand. This type of content is generally longer in length and may draw conclusions from several different sources and varying view points that result in some new sort of insight. Those in the quality camp generally believe that quality rises to the top through content promotion, status updates, sharing, and a sprinkling of SEO. The biggest advantage to focusing on really high quality content is that your personal brand will be seen as thought provoking and you will be seen as a leader in your niche. Con: This is really, really, hard to do day in and day out. There is a huge time factor involved with staying tuned in to the new trends that affect your industry and then synthesizing those thoughts into your own ideas. The other major disadvantage to relying on super high quality is that your posting frequency will be on the low end, at best, maybe once per week on average. There is a direct correlation between your posting frequency and the quantity and quality of search engine traffic you receive. The less you post, the lower your traffic, and the less visibility you have. In favor of quantity: Pro: Those in the favor of quantity generally agree that you can scale best by focusing on shorter posts that go live every couple days. The quantity camp believes that each blog post is like a lottery ticket and the more lottery tickets you have, the better your changes are at winning your lottery. Through sheer volume you will begin to attract more eyeballs in search engines, social networks, and the shareability factor. They argue that not every post is going to be earth shattering news, ground breaking, or identifying a new trend. But, rather, consistent, interesting posts are the best way to scale your personal brand. Con: It is very easy to fall into the trap of not meeting the minimum threshold of quality discussed at the beginning of this post. If that trap is violated too often, you will alienate your readers, lose readers and begin to be perceived as an amateur or quack. You will be called out by other bloggers and your personal brand attributes will start to become negative brand attributes. You also tread the fine line of posting too frequently for your audience and frustrate them with having to keep up with too much content. My take: I think you need to have a minimum of one to two high quality post per week that are in depth, bring in other view points and really pushes the thought envelope. Then, you need to supplement that with blog posts that may be shorter, however still interesting and worth sharing. There are all sorts of strategies to make short posts interesting, but maybe that is next weeks post. Now lets hear what you all think. Is it quality or quantity what do you think is best? *The 3 best comments selected by yours truly will receive a free copy Inbound Marketing: Get Found Using Google, Social Media, and Blogs by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah. Success Story - Jo Green - Part 2 - Jane Jackson Career
Success Story - Jo Green - Part 2 - Jane Jackson Career Inspirational Success Story â" Jo GreenIn April 2010 I wrote a story about Jo Green, one of my coaching clients who, through the identification of her personal and career values, desire to follow her passion and her personal dedication and commitment to the community has become an inspiration to us all. Jo Green Success Story of the MonthRoz Taylor, National Partnerships Manager (left) and Jo Green for Canteen at City2SurfNearly a year later, Iâd like to share with you Joâs thoughts on how rewarding her transition from a corporate market research role to the not-for-profit sector has been. Jo is National Community Fundraiser at CanTeen, The Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer a national support organisation for 12 24 year olds who are living with cancer. Hereâs what Jo has to say:âItâs amazing to work at an organisation where everyone is so passionate about the cause we support. From day one it was clear that everyone enjoys their jobs and at the heart of everything we do are the young people living with cancer that we support.CanTeen runs over 250 programs a year for these young people, and Iâve been lucky enough to attend two in the nine months Iâve been working here. Iâve been blown away by what these young people have to face when they or a member of their family has been diagnosed with cancer. Sitting in a room full of teenagers who have lost a parent to cancer, the reason for CanTeenâs existence, for these young people to be able to share their experiences, became so clear. CanTeen has been a huge support to them, and the thousands of other young people affected by cancer, and allowed them to gain something positive from the upheaval in their lives. There is rarely a quiet day working at CanTeen. From looking after our fundraisers and organising events, to training new staff and selling bandannas itâs been a busy 9 months since I started work here. Having found a gap in CanTeenâs community f undraising programâs my newest project has been launching a new initiative called Terrific Picnic. http://terrificpicnic.org.au. This initiative encourages people to hold a picnic and raise funds for CanTeen, on any day that is suitable for them. We really felt that picnics resonate what CanTeen is all about, bringing people together to connect and share experiences, and have a break from daily life.As I had never worked in fundraising before it has been a learning experience, a completely different way to look at marketing and a rewarding place to be from 9-5.âTo continue to be inspired and for more information on CanTeen and how you can help this truly worthwhile cause, go to: www.canteen.org.auKeep up your amazing work Jo!
